Ecological Character Displacement in a Variable Environment

چکیده

We analyzed a simple genetic model of ecological character displacement in a fluctuating environment. Character states of two identical, competing species were determined by a single-gene, two-allele model. In each generation, the carrying capacity of different segments of a uniform resource spectrum fluctuated randomly. Interand intraspecific exploitation competition reduced litnesses of similar genotypes. In contrast to demographic models of niche shift, this genetic model led to a high average overlap of species in a variable environment. However, for moderate or small environmental fluctuations, character distributions of the two species diverged signilicantly and rapidly. Results were nearly identical for a model of environmental fluctuations that incorporated resource “crunches.” These models were sensitive to the intrinsic rate of increase of the competing species: divergence was substantially slower at small values of r. Nevertheless, most simulations of this simple genetic model suggest that interspecific competition can lead to significant divergence, even in a moderately fluctuating environment.

Character Displacement via Aggressive Interference in Appalachian Salamanders

Ecological character displacement occurs when sympatric species compete with one another, resulting in morphological divergence. Theoretically, character displacement can evolve from a number of ecological interactions, such as exploitation, interference, or predation, but most examples describe species competing exploitatively for limiting resources (typically food). Here I report a case of ch...

Character displacement: ecological and reproductive responses to a common evolutionary problem.

Character displacement is the process by which traits evolve in response to selection to lessen resource competition or reproductive interactions between species. Although character displacement has long been viewed as an important mechanism for enabling closely related species to coexist, the causes and consequences of character displacement have not been fully explored. Moreover, character di...

Ecological opportunity and phenotypic plasticity interact to promote character displacement and species coexistence.

We investigated the roles of resource availability and phenotypic plasticity in promoting ecological character displacement (i.e., trait evolution stemming from resource competition between species). Because ecological character displacement generates new populations that differ in resource use, this process should only occur when exploitable resources are available. We tested this hypothesis i...

MINI REVIEW Character displacement: in situ evolution of novel phenotypes or sorting of pre-existing variation?

Character displacement (Brown & Wilson, 1956), or what Darwin (1859) called divergence of character, is a commonly observed pattern in plants and animals (reviewed in Howard, 1993; Schluter, 2000; Dayan & Simberloff, 2005). Populations of two closely related species are often different phenotypically where the species occur together (‘sympatry’) but are indistinguishable where each species occu...

Does character displacement initiate speciation? Evidence of reduced gene flow between populations experiencing divergent selection.

Character displacement - trait evolution stemming from selection to lessen resource competition or reproductive interactions between species - has long been regarded as important in finalizing speciation. By contrast, its role in initiating speciation has received less attention. Yet because selection for character displacement should act only where species co-occur, individuals in sympatry wil...
